| Our Latest Project: Laying Pavers |
| Our Billings, Montana location brings us this great do-it-yourself guide for laying pavers. |
Each Summer my wife and I pick one yard project to complete around our home. This year we decided to build a brick (also know as pavers) walkway leading from the driveway to our front steps. We chose pavers because they add a unique look, beauty and permanence to any residence. Unlike concrete, clay pavers do not crack and are always in fashion.
Once the gravel was compacted we filled in our walk with 3" of coarse sand and compacted our walk once more. To hold the pavers in place we added STOP EDGE to the sides and anchored it with 10" spikes. We started with a soldier course of pavers along the edge of the driveway and filled in the walk with a basket weave pattern. Most of the pavers along the edges had to be cut (split) to fit. Billings Brick has an easy-to-use splitter that our customers can borrow for over the weekend for these types of projects. Our walkway took a couple of weekends to complete but the whole family got to help and we were very pleased with the results. |

Next we cut out the grass and dug down 8.25". In the photo we have just placed and compacted 3" of 3/4" gravel. Compactors are available at most equipment rental shops.
Using a 2x4 the same width as our walk and the STOP EDGE as guides we smoothed out our sand, providing a nice level bed in which to lay our pavers.
The final step was to take fine sand (mortar sand) and sweep it over the surface of the walk. The sand filled in the voids and the walk was transformed into a solid and beautiful brick walkway!
